I was round at a friend’s house the other day, trying desperately to come up with semi-amusing comedy ideas for a book he’s writing. Neither of us were firing on all cylinders, in fact I’m not even sure I’ve got any cylinders. He might have some cylinders.
Anyway, he was flicking through his iTunes, and played me a song that I vaguely recognised – spiky, jarring, pacy stuff. “OK then, tell me what year this was recorded,” he said, figuring that some kind of music quiz would be preferable to lobbing half-baked gags across the room. “1981,” I said, “I think it’s Josef K.” He looked a bit crestfallen. “Oh, you know it.” Yep. “You know, It’s funny,” he said, “whenever I play this to people, they always guess that it was made last year.”
