Poptones

Poptones, yes, Alan McGee's project after Creation Records had ceased foisting records by the likes of Arnold upon us.

But, more interestingly, a track by Public Image Limited on their staggering “Metal Box” album. I never tire of this song. Jah Wobble was a very good bass player. And yet more pleasure can be derived from sitting back in an armchair while it's playing, and dispensing remarks such as “classic Wobble” or “excellent Wobble”. I also like it when John Lydon sings “You left an 'ole in the back of my 'ead.” Such is the lazy Cockney drawl, it's possible that he means “you left a mole in the back of my bread”.

Robert Lloyd was very good last night, at the Telegraph in Brixton. Sad that there were only 20 people there to see it. It's an excellent venue, actually – I've not been there since the refit. Only problem is when you come through the door: it's not clear where the gigs actually take place. There's some small, light orange lettering on yellowing paper attached to double doors saying “live music this way”, but these doors look like ones that you're not supposed to go through; like the doors that take you into the back of a shoe shop.

I often wonder what lurks in the back of shoe shops. I may have mentioned this before. If there aren't at least 4 golden staircases and 2 cascading fountains, I will find that very disappointing.

I've just advertised in Loot for someone to join the Free French. Karmic justice will probably mean that some bastard writes about the audition in a national newspaper.
