TuneTribe has, in its catalogue pages, 1553 artistes beginning with the letter E, which is a good 1500 more artistes beginning with E than I could recite off the top of my head. I discovered this astounding amount of artistes beginning with E while looking for something to distract me from what I’m supposed to be doing, which involves wallpaper stripping. Finding a random band beginning with a random letter of the alphabet is, believe me, a welcome distraction. Especially when that band turned out to be The Edgar Winter Group.
My knowledge of Edgar Winter is limited. But what he’s remembered for in the UK is, principally, a preposterous performance on ‘The Old Grey Whistle Test’ in 1973 of a nine-minute song called ‘Frankenstein’ that, incredibly, sailed up the charts to Number One in the USA and went on to sell a million copies.
